A Celebration of Aboriginal Performance & Art

February 21 - 28, 2010

Vancouver, BC - Full Circle First Nations Performance is very excited to present the 9th Annual Talking Stick Festival from February 21 - 28, 2010. This vibrant citywide festival provides a stage for extraordinary Aboriginal artists; established and emerging, national and international, performing live music, dance, theatre, multi-media, storytelling and performance art. The festival, co-presented by the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, is thrilled to be able to introduce the Aboriginal culture and arts to the many visitors here during the Olympics.

The festival will have performances taking place in the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, located across from the Olympic Live Site, and the Britannia Centre.

Since its inception, the festival has become a place to honour Aboriginal tradition in contemporary forms, the artistic wealth of the people, and the promise of their future in Canada. The festival is a smorgasbord of Aboriginal artistic expression including, but not limited to music, dance, and spoken word and provides a stage for emerging and established artists.

Welcome

Chewx ma ha7lth Siem en Siyayah

Welcome to 2010 Talking Stick Festival and the territorial lands of the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-watuth.

This citywide festival of extraordinary Aboriginal performance and art features some of the best emerging and established Aboriginal artists. It provides a stage for artists from a variety of artistic expressions - theatre, storytelling, writing, music, dance, performance art and visual arts.

We have many people and organizations to thank for making our 9th Talking Stick a reality - and we ask you to join us in recognizing the generous support of our volunteers, sponsors and funders who, along with the many others, have given their time and energy to this festival.

Our 2010 festival brings together many artists who wouldn't normally have the chance to meet and share their art and their experiences with us. We welcome celebrated guests Pacific Curls and Soul Paua from Aotearoa (New Zealand) and from far across Canada. We look forward to the many creative conversations to be had with artists and audiences alike.

These talented artists join others whose careers are just emerging. All share a passion for the creative spirit - and a belief in the power of artistic expression to illuminate, renew and transform. It is the talent and hard work of these artists that bring to life ancient stories, and point us towards roads not yet traveled. We welcome you and invite you to take in all our festival has to offer. Thank you for joining us on this exciting journey.

Wey chewx yu,

Margo Kane, Artistic Managing Director

On behalf of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, welcome to the 9th annual edition of the Talking Stick Festival. We are honoured to partner with this groundbreaking festival to present a remarkable series of performances featuring Aboriginal artists drawn from Canada and around the world. Cultural Olympiad 2010, which runs January 22 to March 21, is built upon the strength of the artistic community here in Vancouver and its national and international relationships. We are proud to connect and celebrate those communities and to explore the ideas and impulses that inform culture. Talking Stick's extraordinary offerings certainly fit that bill, and we hope you enjoy them and everything the Cultural Olympiad has to offer in 2010.

Robert Kerr, Program Director
