Talking Stick Festival Gala & Opening Reception
When: 2/9/2009 - 2/9/2009

Where: Kay Meek Centre, West Vancouver

Show Description: 7pm

Our Aboriginal legacy continues with this Talking Stick Festival showcase of traditional and contemporary Canadian Aboriginal music and dance.

Traditional Welcome from the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nations by Sahplek Bob Baker and the S’pak’wus Slúlum Eagle Song Dancers. Hosts Margo Kane, Richard Van Camp and Chief Ian Campbell welcome special visitors from the north, Nunavut Throat Singers Becky Kilabuk and Celina Kalluk, Nunavut Drum Dancer Allen Auksaq, and the Inuvialuit Drummers & Dancers.

Traditional Gitksan Dancers of Damelahamid present masked dances, stories, and songs from their family and Saskatchewan's Master Métis fiddler John Arcand and guitarist Vicki Arcand play lively music to accompany championship Métis jiggers Scott Duffee and Yvonne Chartrand and her Compaigni V’ni Dansi. Alberta's singer/songwriter Laura Vinson and her band Free Spirit blend roots, folk and ethnic styles and Vancouver-based Kwakwakwa’wakw Urban Dance Group share some North West Coast drumming and dancing.
